AFL Draft: No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis slept in North Melbourne Guernsey

Jason Horne-Francis, this year’s first draft pick, has already started winning North Melbourne fans.

No.1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis is so excited to join North Melbourne for 2022 that he slept in his new war on Wednesday night.

Since the start of the offseason, speculation had been rife that the Wooden Spoons would select Horne-Francis with the first pick in the draft, and on Wednesday they made it official.

The versatile South Australian will join his new teammates at Arden Street from Monday and is delighted to take the first steps on his AFL journey.

“I slept in Guernsey last night. My mate has a picture of it, ”admitted Horne-Francis on Thursday.

“I just didn’t want to wear anything else. “

Horne-Francis is preparing to fly to Melbourne on Sunday morning and will join the Kangaroos for “straight away” training.

A midfielder capable of wreaking havoc in the forward line, the 18-year-old has already started discussing his role in the 22 with senior coach David Noble.

“(Noble) just said to me, ‘wherever you thought you could fit in, if you want to have a place in the front or in the middle, if you think you’re good enough, you’ll get there,” ”Horne -Francis revealed.

But Horne-Francis knows there are no guarantees now that he’s in the big leagues, not even for a No.1 draft pick.

“It would be really special to start in the first round, but otherwise we’ll just have to keep working hard. It’s going to be a lot of hard work, ”he said.

“I’m really excited. (The Kangaroos) have a bright future. The young players, the senior players and the coaching staff they have are all amazing people.

Presented with the opportunity to select No. 18 Guernsey, the same worn by club legend Wayne Carey, Horne-Francis has instead chosen to dress as No. 6 from next season.

“We knew 18 were there. The tall Wayne Carey wore this but to create my own path I thought (picking # 6) was right for me, ”he said.

Horne-Francis joins big Richmond forward Callum Coleman-Jones and Hugh Greenwood, who backfliped a Gold Coast strike-off and rookie-roster plan, packing for Arden Street.

North Melbourne will return to the draft table on Thursday night with picks 22, 34 and 37 in hand. The club also owns picks 64 and 70.
