Stanford field hockey (3-5, 2-3 American East) fell at Monmouth (7-5, 2-2 American East) 3-1 Sunday morning in New Jersey. The Cardinal landed eight shots on the sticks of six players, but couldn’t score the goals needed to keep up with the Hawks.

Junior Redshirt Lily Croddick scored the Cardinal’s lone goal while first-year defenseman Cara Sambeth continued to show off her defensive skills with two defensive saves – sitting second nationally in total defensive saves. Junior defenseman Molly Redgrove also had a save.

After Monmouth scored just before the ninth minute, Croddick hit back with a curl in front of the net to tie the score at 1-1 just 10 minutes later in the second quarter. A penalty stroke and another from a corner gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead early in the third quarter.

The Cardinal’s three defensive saves, including one by Sambeth in the final two minutes of the game, kept the Hawks from increasing their lead. The Stanford players took four more shots but, with three shots off and one saved, couldn’t add to their score until the 60-minute game was over. With the loss, the Cardinal fell to 3- 5 this season and 2-3 in their conference, the American East.

Field hockey appears to be rebounding in more East American games across the bay against rival Cal. The game is scheduled for October 22 at 5 p.m. PT.

On what would have been Ronin Sharma’s 17th birthday, the aspiring professional hockey player was commemorated by his family and teammates in a ceremony that saw his jersey number withdrawn.

“Ronin will be a Rivermen for life,” said Mike Thompson, assistant coach of the Langley Rivermen.

Along with family and friends, the team paid tribute to Sharma at the George Preston Arena in Langley, BC, ahead of their home opener on Friday.

Sharma was killed alongside her fellow junior hockey players Parker Magnuson and Caleb Reimer when the car they were traveling in crashed into a tree in the Fraser Heights neighborhood of Surrey on August 21.

Sharma’s jersey, number 25, was hoisted to the ceiling following a touching video tribute.

“Ronin was like a son to me. And it’s a very big honor to take your jersey off. So I think the family are really proud of Ronin for that,” said Tarsem Nath, Sharma’s uncle.

“As sad as it is to lose him, there is some peace with us having this night for him.”

Nath said it was a tough day for the family, but the support from the team helped.

“Ronin touched a lot of people,” Nath said. “And when you come here and look around, it shows.”

“He was going to become a professional hockey player”

Players wore Sharma’s name on their jerseys for Friday’s game and will wear Sharma’s initials, RS, on their helmets for the remainder of the season.

“As a hockey player he was great. And as a member of the team he’s even bigger, ”said Thompson.

“I can’t count how many guys came up to me and told me he came by my side when I wasn’t feeling well and took care of me. It was Sharms, it was right a great boy. “

Thompson said Sharma had the “computer factor” that could have taken him to the pro league.

“He was going to be a professional hockey player,” he said. “He could score. He worked hard. He tried to be the best at everything he could, every day.”

For Sharma’s family, the loss of a family member is always a painful injury, but Nath said he knew his nephew would like them to celebrate his life.

“I’m just going to try and think of all the good times,” Nath said, biting back tears.

“[We’re going to] do what Ronin wanted us to do… just celebrate it and be happy for him, which he accomplished at such a young age. “

What Happened October 8 in New York Ranger History

On that date in 1976, the New York Rangers were playing their first game in Colorado state, beating the Colorado Rockies 5-3. It was the second game of the new season for the Rangers, coming two days after a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota North Stars.

In Game 1, Rangers right winger Rod Gilbert had three assists but did even better in Game 2. He tied a franchise record with five assists as he got an assist on Rangers’ five goals. That’s not all.

No Ranger had ever totaled eight points in the first two games of the season, and no NHL player had ever collected eight assists in the first two games. These two records are still valid, even if they are tied.

The eight-point record was tied by Mika Zibanejad in 2019, but the eight assists are still a franchise and NHL record. In fact, only one other player has managed to duplicate this feat in NHL history. John Cullen of the Pittsburgh Penguins collected eight assists in his first two games of the 1990-91 season.

With 406 career goals, Gilbert is best known as the top scorer in Blueshirts history, but he was no slouch when it came to scoring goals as he sits second with 615 assists. , behind only Brian Leetch.

The beginnings of Henrik Lundqvist

On that date in 2005, a 23-year-old Swedish rookie goaltender named Henrik Lundqvist made his first start for the Rangers, losing 3-2 in overtime to the New Jersey Devils at Continental Airlines Arena. It was Rangers’ third game of the season and Lundqvist made 24 saves while ceding the game-winning goal to Brian Rafalski 3:17 in overtime.

Kevin Weekes started the season as the number one goalie and was back in goal the next game, a 3-2 loss to Washington. Then it was Lundqvist’s turn and he took off, starting eight of the next nine and going 5-3-1 while allowing just 15 goals in those eight starts.

Weekes and Lundqvist continued to share goalkeeper duties until the end of December, when Lundqvist was named top goalkeeper. The highlight of the season for Lundqvist was leading Sweden to a gold medal at the 2006 Olympics.

Lundqvist was not exactly an unknown for the 2005-06 season. In 2002-03 with Frölunda in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), he set records for lowest goals against average (GAA) of 1.45 and best save percentage (Sv%) of 0.948 . The previous season, he led the SHL with an average of 1.79, .936 Sv%, six shutouts while going 33-8-3 and winning the league championship.

2005-06 was the only season in his Ranger career that he didn’t start opening night with an 8-5-1 record for the next 14 years.

Playing a team for the first time… .two times

We mentioned that in 1976 the Rangers played their first game in Colorado, playing and beating the Rockies for the first time since the team moved from Kansas City after two seasons as Boy Scouts.

Fast forward six years and it’s 1982 and on that date the Rangers faced the New Jersey Devils for the first time, at Brendan Byrne Arena. The Devils had moved from Colorado this season, so the Rangers had the distinction of making their debut against the same franchise twice on the same day, six years apart.

Things didn’t go as well against the Devils as they did in Denver as New Jersey won their first game with their new name. Merlin Malinowski scored a power-play goal at 17:06 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and seal the Devils victory. Former Islander Glenn “Chico” Resch was in goal for New Jersey.

Who scored the Rangers’ first goal against the New Jersey Devils? It was Anders Hedberg on assists from Olympians Rob McClanahan and Bill Baker. It was an unpleasant game, a harbinger of things to come as the teams were scrapped 92 minutes in combined penalties, including match misconduct against Dave and Don Maloney in the third period scrum with Dave Hutchison .

Today’s birthdays

16 NHL players were born on October 8, including a former Ranger.

Stratton Art was born on that date in 1935 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was a forward who played 18 games for the Rangers during the 1959-60 season. His NHL career spanned 95 games over four seasons from 1959 to 1968. Stratton, who traveled widely, played for 21 teams in various leagues during a hockey career that spanned 23 years.

Hockey Juan Diego is back on the ice with his own team for the first time in seven years.

By Special at Catholic Intermountain

Avril van der Sluys

DRAPER – The Juan Diego Catholic High School hockey team is back in its own team jerseys after seven years playing under several independent high school teams due to low player numbers. Thanks to the efforts of head coach Moe van der Sluys, JD hockey was back in full swing to begin the 2021-2022 hockey season on September 22, when Juan Diego claimed a 6-2 victory over the Stars of SL.

Juan Diego’s hockey won its third state title in 2018 – an accomplishment coach van der Sluys was able to share with his hockey-playing daughter, Piper. Having coached this team long enough to have had all three of her children on the team over the years, it was fitting that the state championship victory came with her youngest on the ice.

“You always play to win, but as I have always told our players, we play for fun first,” he said. “If you have fun playing the sport you love, then you are already winning. “

Still, “it was a great feeling to lift this trophy after coaching the team for so long,” said the coach.

This year’s team of 14 skaters is young, with just two seniors on the roster, and he looks to the next generation of hockey players who will come to Juan Diego to continue to build this team and have them skate like one. alone.

“Our team’s mission has always been to keep our Juan Diego hockey players skating and playing the sport we love,” said van der Sluys. “Getting to play the 2021-2022 Utah high school hockey season wearing our school jersey and representing Juan Diego has been a long way, but it was worth it. ”

The JDCHS hockey schedule is available at www.gosoaringeagle.com or www.utahhighschoolhockey.com.

April van der Sluys is the Juan Diego Catholic Schools Advancement Coordinator.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is doubling Dogecoin’s viability ahead of the NBA regular season announcement later this month. The Shark Tank star predicts the Mavs will cash “thousands and thousands” per week in US dollars through Dogecoin transactions with fans.

“A lot of people pay in dogecoin,” Cuba said on Monday Business fox. “We sell thousands and thousands of dollars a month during the off-season. Once the season begins, I expect this to happen every week in dogecoin. Because it’s easy to spend and doesn’t like it so much that people want to keep it forever.

On March 4 of last season, the Mavericks announcement that fans could use Dogecoin to purchase tickets and merchandise through the team’s online store. At that time, Dogecoin was trading at around $ 0.05, which is half of a dime. Dogecoin is currently valued at around 25 cents after hitting a high of around 69 cents in May.

The Mavericks, in 2019, began accepting other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in partnership with payment processing provider BitPay. Other teams to accept crypto include the Sacramento Kings, San Jose Sharks and Oakland A’s.

NFL players such as Russell Okung and Sean culkin are known to have converted part of their wages into Bitcoin – while stars like Tom Brady and Steph Curry have signed endorsements with a crypto firm FTX. But Cuban doesn’t expect teams to pay their players directly in anything other than traditional dollars.

“It’s okay, but it will eventually [players] will have less money, ”Cuban told Fox Business. “The reason is that there are transaction costs for us to go from dollar to bitcoin and then transfer it to them. So it’s actually easier for them to get paid in cash and then buy bitcoin themselves. ”

It’s pretty easy to pick from the early rounds of a fantasy hockey draft. Pick a star player here, a frontline forward there, secure a star goalie and, really, it’s not that hard to lay the groundwork for a fantastic hockey team.

Where the job gets a little more difficult is when the draft starts to move on to later rounds, as there is a lot more variance in the potential results. So, for this exercise, I looked at players ranked outside of the Top 300 on Yahoo to find players whose edge is worth taking before – in some cases long before – their preseason rankings.

The objective when shooting players ranked this far down the list is to shoot backwards. There are legitimate reasons why a player can be ranked so low on the roster, but there are also reasons why players can exceed the expected low-barrel value.

Maybe they have new opportunities with better teammates or a place on the power play, or it could be a rookie making his way to a bigger role. For a variety of reasons, here are 21 players to target in the final rounds that just might make a difference to your fantastic team:

Tyler Johnson, C / RW, Chicago

Yahoo: 561

Before actually being buried in the depth chart in his last two seasons with Tampa Bay, Johnson has scored 45 or more points in five of the previous six seasons, so he’s established he can contribute offensively. But the big reason to consider Johnson is that the Blackhawks are giving him a middle chance between

Are you tired of the goal scorers getting all the glory? We’re betting the 15+ players on the South Jersey High School Field Hockey Honor Roll this week are.

This week we are putting the offense aside and celebrating the most athletic part of the sport, goalkeepers.

Burlington County League

Madison Clevenger, Florence

It is no coincidence that the Flashes are at 8-1. With three shutouts, Clevenger has yet to allow more than one goal this season.

Veronica Diaz, Rancocas Valley

The Red Devils have already thrown seven shutouts this season and Diaz is a huge reason for that.

Tiffany Tolomeo, Riverside

All four of the Rams’ wins have been shutouts. Tolomeo gives Riverside a chance every time they play.

Week 3: South Jersey High School Field Hockey Mean 15

Cape Atlantic League

Nora Bridgeford and Taryn Dolka, Ocean City

You are likely to see both CO goaltenders play every time they play and both give the opposing offense almost no chance, with seven shutouts in eight wins.

Rebecca Macchia, Egg Harbor

In 10 games, the Eagles are perfect, with Macchia making five shutouts and allowing just eight goals.

Julia Tola, Our Lady of Mercy

The villagers enjoyed great success with Tola behind them, securing five shutouts including two draws.

Colonial Conference

Moira Geiger, Haddonfield

With four shutouts to date, it would be hard to find a bigger reason for the Dawgs’ success early in the season.

Lindsay Naulty, catwalk

The Gators have recorded four shutouts in their six wins, thanks in large part to Naulty.

Grace Weachter, Township of Haddon

Four shutouts, four wins for Hawks goaltender Weachter.

Olympic conference

Sarah Crysler, Cherokee

In any type of game, Crysler is the keeper goal teams want behind them.

Susie Miller, East

There are whole games where Miller has nothing to do, but when called up there are few better in the cage.

Madison DiLemme, Bishop Eustache

An Olympic schedule can be a minefield for a goalie, but DiLemme makes even the toughest saves seem effortless.

League of three counties
